What are the wire and cable insulation materials?
As we all know, commonly used wire and cable silicone waterproof seals are cross-linked polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene. What is the difference between these different insulation materials? Why not use a single material as a wire and cable insulation material?
1. Cross-linked polyethylene is a high-grade form of polyethylene after transformation. After being improved, it has greatly improved physical properties and chemical properties compared to PE materials, and at the same time, significantly improved its heat resistance. Therefore, the XLPE insulated wire and cable has the advantages that the polyethylene insulated wire and cable can't match: the insulation resistance is relatively large, corrosion resistance, light weight, and good heat resistance.
2. Polyvinyl chloride is a polymer in which vinyl chloride monomer is freely polymerized under specific conditions. It has the characteristics of aging resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, corrosion resistance and stability. It is widely used in pipelines, wires and cables, sealing materials, daily necessities, building materials and so on. It is divided into soft and hard: soft is mainly used for packaging materials, agricultural film, etc., widely used in the manufacture of wire and cable insulation, and hard is generally used to make pipes and plates. The most important feature of PVC material is flame retardant, so it is widely used in the field of fire protection. It is one of the most common insulating materials for flame retardant and refractory wire and cable applications. 3. Polyethylene is a kind of thermoplastic resin obtained by polymerization of ethylene. It is non-toxic and harmless, has excellent low-temperature resistance, and is resistant to most acid and alkali corrosion and has excellent electrical insulation properties. At the same time, since polyethylene has a non-polar property, it has the characteristics of low loss and high electrical conductivity, and therefore is generally used as an insulating material for high-voltage wires and cables.
